Overview

This standard comprises the following elements:

1 Operate and monitor vehicle instruments and controls.
2 Ensure the efficient and careful use of the vehicle.

This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role involves Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions or Explosives work activities. This includes people working as transport operators

Performance Criteria

1 Operate and monitor vehicle instruments and controls
P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines
P2 operate the vehicle controls
P3 monitor the vehicle instruments at suitable times during driving
P4 operate the vehicle controls to maintain the safety and security of self, the vehicle and others
P5 identify any problems with the vehicle systems and take appropriate action

Knowledge and Understanding

1 Operate and monitor vehicle instruments and controls
K1 the health, safety and environmental and other statutory legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures governing explosives and their implications for your area of work
K2 the relevance of personal protective equipment (PPE)
K3 the actions to be taken in response to an unplanned event
K4 how to operate different vehicle systems
K5 typical problems that could occur with different systems

Scope and Range

1. Controls: accelerator; clutch; footbrake; handbrake; steering wheel; gears;
indicators; lights; windscreen wipers; demisters; heating and ventilation
2. Instruments: gauges; warning lights; displays; audible alerts
3. Vehicle systems: ignition; electrical; lights; brakes; transmission; engine;
fuel; tyres
4. Legal, safety, and operating requirements: highway codes; transport
regulations; load restrictions; alcohol limits and drug restrictions; drivers’ hours
