Overview

This standard comprises the following elements:

1. Decide the research protocols for explosive substances and/or articles.
2. Draw up research plans for explosive substances and/or articles.

This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role involves Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions or Explosives work activities. This includesindividuals working as research leaders.

Performance Criteria

1. Decide the research protocols for explosive substances and/or articles.
P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines
P2 establish the evaluation criteria to determine the success of the research
P3 review critically and assess the suitability of existing methods, techniques and apparatus
P4 select the methods, techniques and apparatus for the purpose of the research
P5 adapt existing methods, techniques and apparatus before new ones are developed
P6 pilot new methods, techniques and apparatus, testing and evaluating their fitness for purpose and making modifications
P7 develop new methods, techniques and apparatus in line with regulatory guidelines
P8 report your findings in the correct format

Knowledge and Understanding

1. Decide the research protocols for explosive substances and/or articles.
K1 the health, safety and environmental and other statutory legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures governing explosives and their implications for your area of work
K2 the relevance of personal protective equipment (PPE)
K3 the nature, characteristics, hazards and risks of the explosive substances and/or articles
K4 the actions to be taken in response to an unplanned event
K5 your organization’s operational policies and objectives K6 the requirements of the research strategy
K7 the business risks of the research strategy
K8 the range of possible methods to achieve the desired outcomes and their relative advantages and disadvantages
K9 methods for evaluating the fitness for purpose of the methods, techniques and apparatus
K10 methods for evaluating the success of the research
K11 problem solving techniques
K12 the impact of the cost of developing or adapting new methods, techniques and apparatus

Scope and Range

1. Scope of the research; individually; collaboratively
2. Resources: with limited resources; with full resources
