Overview

Charge blast holes to specification in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

This standard comprises the following:

1 Check blast sites prior to charging
2 Prepare the explosive materials
3 Charge blast holes with explosive materials
4 Remove and dispose of surplus materials

You will be required to demonstrate that you can charge blast holes to specification in accordance with the relevant workplace procedures.

This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role involves explosives work activities. This includes blasting personnel.

Performance Criteria

1 Check blast sites prior to charging

P1 written information relevant to the blasting specification is scrutinized and checked as complete and any ambiguities are clarified with authorized persons
P2 each blast hole is checked for condition, dimension, angle, inclination and direction as appropriate to ensure it is suitable for charging to the blast specification
P3 any variations to the blasting specification are identified, recorded, reported and confirmed to the appropriate persons
P4 problems and conditions outside the responsibility of the candidate are referred to an authorized person
P5 work is carried out to approved procedures and practices and in compliance with statutory requirements

2 Prepare the explosive materials

P6 explosives are correctly checked to ensure they conform in quantity and type to the blasting specification
P7 explosives are handled and prepared in conformity with the manufacturers’ recommendations, operational and organizational rules and procedures and with relevant legislation
P8 precautions are taken to protect materials and personnel against adverse environmental conditions
P9 required quantities of explosives are prepared in accordance with the blast specification
P10 problems and conditions outside the responsibility of the candidate are referred to an authorized person
P11 work is carried out to approved procedures and practices and in compliance with statutory requirements
