Counter Terrorism (CT) operations in the UK are run jointly by the intelligence services and the Police National Counter Terrorism Units governed by the ACPO Terrorism and Allied Matters Committee. Over recent years there have been significant developments in international terrorism. The threat is evolving and is currently at a significantly high level.
The UK’s counter terrorism strategy (CONTEST) provides a framework for CT efforts under four workstreams, Prevent, Protect, Prepare and Pursue. UK Government assets such as the Home Office’s Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) work in partnership with the security industry and UK law enforcement to develop cutting edge techniques to combat crime, protect police officers and enhance national security.
Areas vital in delivering this capability include:
- Overt and covert surveillance equipment
- Forensics (scene examination and laboratory services)
- CT/serious crime investigation
- Major event security
- CBRN training, detection and response
- National disaster and emergency management
- Public order and ballistic protection equipment (body protection, shields etc)
- Specialist vehicle design and equipment
- Asset tracking, using terrestrial and space-based capabilities
- IED/bomb disposal
- Use of firearms and less lethal options
- Executive protection
- Training across all areas of law enforcement
ISSEE will be joined at SCTX by Amba Defence, in a continuation of our strategic partnership. The link-up with Amba connects advanced security technology with the people who count on it every day. The creation of a product focused operational training capability enables our customers to receive high quality, relevant instruction in the technical use and operation of security and defence equipment without separate contracts or conflicting advice. For example, Amba’s Manta Under Vehicle Inspection System, where operators are prepared for all kinds of scenarios including the protocols to follow should an IED or weapon be detected.
