Overview

This standard covers the competences you need to carry out small scale processing for explosive substances and/or articles in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

You will be required to demonstrate that you can confirm the suitability and correct set-up of the equipment, prior to use. Establishing and maintaining the required controlled conditions in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role involves Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions or Explosives work activities. This includes people working as researchers, designers and developers.

Performance Criteria

P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines
P2 confirm the suitability and correct set-up of the equipment, prior to use
P3 ensure that the resources are available and are serviceable, prior to use
P4 establish and maintain the required controlled conditions
P5 produce the required quantities within specification, in accordance with the processing plan
P6 recommend modifications to the procedures
P7 reinstate the work area to a safe condition after processing
P8 take action in the event of unplanned occurrences, and record and report them in the correct format
P9 record information using the correct documentation

Knowledge and Understanding

K1 the health, safety and environmental and other statutory legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures governing explosives, and their implications for your area of work
K2 the relevance of personal protective equipment (PPE)
K3 the nature, characteristics, hazards and risks of the explosive substances and/or articles
K4 the actions to be taken in response to an unplanned event
K5 the small scale processing procedure to be followed
K6 the risks and consequences inherent in the processing procedure
K7 the necessary conditions, and how to maintain them
K8 how to calibrate and operate the equipment
K9 the action to be taken in the event of deviations or problems

K12 how to consign waste and other products for disposal
