The role of the EOD team Technical Assistant or No2 is critical to the success of operationally deployed teams. Much emphasis is rightly placed on the training and qualifications of the IEDD Operator to meet the demanding requirements of a competent C-IED response to terrorist threats involving devices incorporating explosives, muntions and other hazardous payloads.
ISSEE has always recognised the importance of appropriate training for all EOD team members, and, in addition to the series of courses delivered at Operator level, has developed a less well known range of courses aimed at those not yet trained, qualified or experienced in this discipline. These courses range from Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) ROV handling, maintenance, weapon loading and deployment; to the courses recently conducted for Police EOD Drivers/No2s of S015, the Counter Terrorist Command of the Metropolitan Police Service. This range of courses provides training and qualification to those who are just beginning their careers and those more experienced practitioners who are serving in Operational EOD Units, but who have not previously undergone formal training. Exercise Equinox ISSEE was selected to host Exercise Equinox over the period 26/27 September. It was quite simply the variety of training environments that encouraged the Wiltshire Resilience Forum to engage with the company. Over 500 participants were involved in the exercise which covered the police command levels of bronze, silver and gold. Not only were the Police, Ambulance and Fire Services present, but also members from Casualty Union - volunteer participants who represent injured and wounded in a frighteningly accurate manner.
Realistic training inspires the players and considerable time and effort was dedicated to the Underground Search and Rescue (USAR) facilities. Developed and constructed by team members from RAPID UK - a well known and experienced USAR volunteer group with international experience - the "demolished building" presented a real-life challenge to the USAR players and paramedics. One of the paramedics described the facility as "one of the best and more demanding of those available in UK".
ISSEE will be offering explosive related training opportunities to participants of Exercise Equinox in the near future. USAR facilities will be utilised as well ISSEE's considerable depth of experience in explosives. ISSEE welcomes enquiries from any organisation wishing to use its outdoor and indoor training facilities and environments. Updated 9th October 2008
Exercise Equinox In acknowledging the varied and demanding training environment offered by the International School for Security and Explosives Education (ISSEE) on its training area and indoor facilities, the Wiltshire Resilience Forum has hired the site upon which to run Exercise Equinox.
Exercise Equinox is a 500 hundred man training exercise involving the Emergency Services in the context of dealing with an emergency (aircraft crash) involving several fatalities and many injured.
Professor Alan Hatcher - the CEO of ISSEE - said "We are delighted to be able to host this important practice of multi-agency procedures and to contribute to such a demanding exercise. Our training areas and indoor facilities are constantly in demand for this type of exercise and we pride ourselves on our ability to produce demanding and innovative decision making scenarios for senior management in all walks of life, not just the Emergency Services."
